i have a 1964 ford fairlane 500 it currently has a 260 or a 289 i havent decoded it yet i want to put in a bigger motor what motors would fit i was thinkin 390 with a c6 tranny behind it i am not affraid of modifying anything but i want to try not to mess with the motor mounts

its probably a 260 the 260 is about the same as the 289-302 and the 351w if i was you id put a 351w in it and maybe cam it and put some nice heads on it good to drive around and strip my friend had one that same year and we put a 351w in in and put a big cam in it and put some nice rouch heads and roller cam and rockers and lifters was more than what it needs would push that big car right over the line doing a good 12s

... Why do you want a 390 in that little car?

The 289 you have in there would move it well enough. Trust me.

... You don't know whether it's a 260 or a 289? That should be easy enough to figure out even without looking at the casting numbers/VIN.

go to "woodys fairlane site" for anything concerning your car. type in "popular hot rodding" they have built a killer 64 im sure you will enjoy looking at. if you do mod the car do not dispose of the original parts as fairlanes are becoming very popular. 1966 was the first year for the ass stomping 427 and the begining of the horse power wars. look for a 390 with a c6 in a pickup as they were made through 1976. get everything [the whole truck if possible] because you will need everything to put it in your fairlane. there are many high performance after market parts for the 390 if you choose to go that way. good luck.

the bigest engine without major modifacations would be a fe series engine which the biggest being 428 in stock form same basic engine as 390 your best bet is to put a 351 windsor in it since parts are cheaper and more available for this motor
