The crf150r is the better bike for racing but if you are only just starting out there is nothing wrong with the kx. Both bikes will need regular maintenance and that is directly connected to how reliable the bike is. If you don't clean the oil filter our after racing and do the general maintenance then you can expect that you will end up with problems.
