After seeing the reaction to recent environmental disasters and incidents, I can't help but wonder if these doomsday predictions are sometimes born of a desire to be rid of responsibility for the health of this planet and other responsibilities.
Oil spill? Don't think about how you can help, scream "2012!! It's a sign the end of the world is coming".
Fish kills? Don't worry about how we're poisoning the planet because the world will end next year anyway.
What better way to absolve yourself of responsibility for ANYTHING, including the environment, if the world ends next year.
