What method besides trial and error could you use to solve this problem?

The problem is..Make as many different hexiamonds as you can. A hexiamond is made by joining six equilateral triangles-when a side is connected, a whole side connects to a whole side. I know the answer which is there are 12 possible hexiamonds you can create. But what other methods can be used besides trial and error to solve this problem? What systematic methods can be used?
