What makes people racist?

how does your theory reconcile the observation of racist people with little to no contact with other races?

it's possible to have pride in your heritage without being a racist if you show equal respect to those that are different. Racism asserts one race is superior/inferior to another; racists display an unreasonable animosity towards another group.

what i hate the most is if a black guy walks in the room, i won't say anything and i'll treat him with the respect he deserves, but in my head, first gut reaction is a joke. its not "IMA LYNCH YOU BOY" but I just....I still have that initial pang of racism, and it's nothing to be proud of :\
edit: this is due in part to the fact that I was isolated from african americans largely. although in 1st grade I had a good black friend.

i think 99% of "racists" just have a problem with black people now

not much intrawhite hate like italian vs irish...and i can't see a problem with asians/hispanics

This is my point exactly.

Example I had just this week:

I was in the food store and I saw a fat black woman get out of line. She returns about two minutes later to her spot original spot in line. The Korean woman behind her did not appreciate this and commented that she should go to the back of the line. Sure enough, there was much clicking of teeth and ethnic attitude followed by a refusal to move back in line. Funny thing is that before the incident even happened I had pegged this woman as trouble due to her being young, fat and black.

hang around part of the deep south for a year. It's hard not to be racist in the south

Live in the South for a year and see how racist you are. No one understands the ridiculous shit down here. New Orleans

Racism is natural - you can't possible cope with all the information in the real world without shortcuts so your brain has to take them. Some for the better, some for the worse.

About all you can really do is be conscious of this fact and every once in a while question the things you take as obvious, truth, etc.

I don't know a single black person that celebrates Kwanza or speaks ebonics, where do you people live, the ghetto?
