what makes a good poem?

i am looking for tips for making a good poem, b/c i've entered a contest on college. one that will easily grab attention and "wow" people. i have not written a poem in a long while, i don't want to rhyme b/c i feel rhyming is childish. The theme is dark b/c it has to be related to halloween in some way (not sure yet what it will be about, i have an idea)
"at" college, not "on"
 
rhyming isn't childish if done right. My only advice it to let it come from the heart, make it real, raw-
