What limits would you put on yourself if you did an adult animated series?

Since when has "lack of accuracy to reality" been a reason behind making something taboo?


And I'm not saying every fight needs to have gallons of blood. But, you know, I cut my ear once while I was trimming my hair, and damn it if I didn't stain almost half my shirt red. You'd think I wouldn't be able to say that I've bled more than the Nolanverse Batman has.
 
Here's what I'd do:

-Topical humour and pop cultutre references are okay (and strongly encouraged) as long as they are relevant to the current situation/scene (think about all the times in WB cartoons where the characters utter contemporary advertising slogans or radio catchphrases and you'll see what I mean)
-Near-WB quality animation if possible, if not possible, then compensate with better writing
-No over-the-top sexual references
-No carnage
 
Yup. That's where Toon City comes into the picture.

Anyway, two more guidelines I forgot to mention:
-Tobacco and alcohol use is okay once and a while, as long as it is not in a manner that condones or glorifies their use
-No drug use. Period.
 
Haha I've always wanted to see this kind of topic! Considering I dream of making an adult cartoon when I grow up this seems like my kinda topic.

1. No use of cursing that needs to be censored, I know that sells for DVD's but I just hate that for some reason.

2. Sex and Racism jokes are kept to a minimum, I don't want people getting offended by how tasteless my show is, even though it will be at times.

3. Pop culture references are kept to a minimum also, I know that's what people find to be hilarious these days but...that's WAY too easy to pull humor from and I expect my team to be creative enough to not have to resort to those all the time.

There are more but...that's enough for now.
 
Your standards are...interesting. You obviously don't think the word gay is as insulting as the word retard, otherwise you'd be talking about the g-word right now, not the word gay.

Words have no inherent meaning beyond what context gives them. One thing that bugs me is that people have no concept of irony: if you'd notice, most of the characters who use those kind of words in offensive ways are characters we're SUPPOSED to think are stupid.

I get that these are your standards, and that's rad, but...come on. Really? You're going to pretty much eliminate any potential for irony-laced humor because you don't feel comfortable saying the word retard? Some people ARE people with limited vocabularies...or will your cartoons not have characters that're relatable everymen?

And again, a bizarre double standard. No jokes about religion, but your standards don't include "Don't mock atheists." Because atheism is not a religion. So...might wanna adjust your rules a bit. Sure don't want to offend anybody in your cartoon intended for grown men and women.

(I'm a theist, by the way...I also think ANY comedy is fair game. It's all about how you construct the joke. We live in a strange world where irony and postmodernism magically happened, we all can take a little jab at ourselves every now and then).

I have less issues with this.

As for my own standards? Depends entirely on what the show would actually be. And if I had to think of a few of my ideas...some would need more older themes than others.
