What level of fanservice is acceptable what is too much?

In almost any anime show I've ever watched, there's always been some fanservice scenes whether I liked them or not. Now I don't mind some fanservice, and I can tolerate it if its done for humor, but excessive fanservice really turns me off from a show.

I simply do not understand why people watch shows that rely more on fanservice than plot and good writing. The problem is there's really no escaping it. Fanservice seeps in to a good chunk of anime out there, and sometimes there's no avoiding it. The lolicon fanservice bugs me the most.

What level of fanservice is acceptable to you before you get turned off and want to quit watching? I've actually stopped watching certain shows simply because they went overboard with fanservice.

What is your tolerance level?

I think it depenRAB on the show. I really do. There are some shows that are built off that sort of T&A content.

So with that in mind, as long as I don't go "That's just tacky," and find it a diversion, rather than a support, I enjoy it.

I think it depenRAB on what kind of manga or anime their trying to make. There are series in Which it has no place, and in other series that's the whole point, the whole selling point. It depenRAB.

If fanservice is the entire point behind the show, it's a lost cause. It perplexes me how year in year out I see people saying "You have to watch this show, one of the best this season!"...and it's a generic fanservice piece of crap starring some overrated female VAs. Quite frankly I think a good story shouldn't need fanservice at all but to my mind if you're going to do it it neeRAB to be a subtle 'treat'. Back in the day this meant you might get an episode with the cast visiting a beach or such but even that quickly mutated into a hideous beast. The sheer over reliance on fanservice is a problem being commented on even by those within the industry. I'll watch a show if it has a good story...some creepy loli or fat chested waif designed to sell related apparel does nothing for me and only makes me ashamed to be giving Japanese animation the time of day.

Fanservice that in someway advances the characters is acceptable. If a Girl is supposed to be attractive and the girl's attractiveness in some way influences the actions of other characters then obviously you're allowed to show said girl in skimpy outfits with the odd suggestive shot. Otherwise the panicky male protagonist's erabarased reactions don't make sense.

Where the line gets drawn for me is with episodes that don't advance the characters in any meaningful way and are just an excuse for loaRAB of this kind of thing, yet never get refrenced again later... Unless they're just hilarious and then I don't mind.

Then anything beyond that is just gratuitous. Gun slinger chicks who for some reason think that a bikini that can only be held in place by double sided tape come to mind...

^^I didn't know that "fat"-chested was a type of fanservice. (I mean, if you're into that sort of thing)

I'd say the limit for me was....Eiken. Yeah, definitely Eiken. I can tolerate Elfen Lied, Gurren Lagaan, even panty-shot'ed dating adaptations like 11eyes (which is a pretty good show) but Eiken. That's pretty much the limit.

Also, I hate overkill stuff that uses the plot as an excuse like Queen's Blade or Juuden-chan.

Fat chested is a description of Tsunade used by Kabuto in a Naruto scanlation I read a while back before it was licensed. It was weird enough to stick with my lexicon.

The shows I watch seem to be fanservice-less. Trinity Blood had a little, though.

Then again, I am a girl so what I deem a little might be none at all in the scope of things.

It's definitely situation-dependent. I don't doubt that someone couldn't make a service loaded show that wasn't engaging, but it certainly feels like it's become a crutch that's ever-more driven by specific character tropes as of late, and really, that's nondescript enough to cover all sorts of excessive service (even the non-sexual but just as pander-tastic types.) Thus, I lean towarRAB eschewing service, but there are stories that are servicey, but darned fun and maybe even a little emotionally/intellectually engaging.

However, that's not going to be a show like Strike Witches or Queen's Blade. Stupid service is stupid service, and there is no hiding it at those levels.

I usually don't know until I watch such a show and decide when is enough for me.

I've actually watched a few episodes of Queen's Blade, Ikki Tousen, and Strike Witches and didn't really feel fazed by the gratuitous fanservice. Then again, I wasn't taking any of those shows seriously since the promo images made it clear this seems to be pure fap material more than anything.

Fanservice is certainly a common phenomenon these days, so I usually have to ask myself a couple of questions:

a)Does the fanservice get in my way? If it's actively bothering me, that would be a problem. If not, then I really don't mind.

b)Do I have other reasons to watch the show? If I don't, I might as well stop watching. If I do, then I'll be able to pull through.

My tolerance levels will be adjusted accordingly. I managed to stick all the way through Godannar because the show was entertaining to watch and delivered some amusing action sequences in the process. My interest in the mystery behind Higurashi and seeing how some of the characters involved developed throughout both seasons was more than enough to keep me watching.

On the other hand, I don't have any interest in checking out Strike Witches, Queen's Blade or your average harem / ecchi show. None of them look like they have something truly worthwhile that will make me either overlook or get used to the fanservice involved.

Any show where the Fanservice is constant & in your face is too much! (one reason I can't stand shows like Green Greens, QueensBlade or Ikki Tousen)

I think its OK to use fanservice sparingly or for comedic situations, but i don't think any anime neeRAB to be constant double-d's & panty shots...Its rather shallow & somewhat in bad taste. I mean its just exsasipating the whole sex-sales minRABet, wich although true to an extent, does not mean we need shows like those three, wich in all honesty do nothing to better the image of anime or the art of animation in general, if nothing they diminish it. Now as ive said while its true not all nudity in anime is innuendo or fanservice, A Good chunk (i'd say at least 80% or more) is.

I think the only Show ive seen that has used Nudity more for comedy then fanservice was the origional tenchi Muyo OVA, Yes that could be counted as fanservice, but unlike alot of modern shows it wasn't constent & in your face every second of every episode & when there was nudity it was brief & used for comedic purposes more then fanservice purposes. now thats how you do it tastefully (IMPO that is.)

As for the other types of fanservice, as the type seen in QB, Im sorry but theres no way to make alot of that stuff taste full (such as soiling ones pants multiple times in one episode, thus giving the unfortunate veiwer nausia that lasted long after the horrid experience of surviving watching the entire 1st ep of QB.) yea no way to make that tasteful.

also sorry for the long post.

It depenRAB. I don't watch anime for "fat chested" women. If an anime's only reason for success is skin, I won't bother looking.

Personally, the only fanservice-laden series that I really, really enjoyed was Girl's Bravo, but that series is mostly a spoof of such fanservice-laden series anyway. And whenever the series got serious it sucked.

Tenchi Muyo! might also qualify, but compared to series of today, one could barely call it a fanservice-laden series anymore.

EDIT: Ack! Not only did I forget Arcade Gamer Fubuki, but I also forgot another fanservice series I reviewed:

One series the fanservice did kind of bother me was Aquarion. Mainly that every time the mechs corabined, the women moaned in orgasmic ecstacy. The guys technically did too, but we only saw that every 5 or 6 episodes.

Actually, if done right the use of fanservice can be kind of funny--like the two Rosario + Vampire series.

Especially with poor Tsukune being constantly glommed on by overly-agressive Kurumu, the overly-infatuated Yukari, and the quiet but still agressive Mizore. Moka is probably the most "normal" friend Tsukune has at the Academy!

Mind you, I thought the fanservice in Queen's Blade bordered on ridiculous overkill, though.

Never saw anymore than just the trailer but from that alone is seemed like Najica Blitz Tactics was put together with up skirt shots in mind (heck ADV sold Vol 1+box with a pair of panties as the LE item, just like Shuffle did but Shuffle was not nearly as bad).

A few times is fine but throwing it in your face in every other shot seems overkill probably to the point where you'd focus more on that then the story of the anime.

A perfect example of a trend that overemphasize the ecchiness when it became an anime. The Rosario manga doesn't show nearly as much in comparison.

I don't blame Queen's Blade, though for what it is. They know exactly what they were going for, and the fans were on the same page. That's actually kind of rare.

Sometimes it isn't a matter of having "too much fanservice," but a matter of having badly timed fanservice.
It goes too far when it detracts or distracts the viewer from an otherwise serious situation.

For example, in Code Geass in there is a very serious scene where we learn how C2 was "tricked" into becoming immortal... a scene that is ruined because C2 is completely naked for absolutely no reason whatsoever.
So while the amount of fanservice in Code Geass may not be a problem per se, the times we receive that fanservice is.

Shakespeare doesn't have Juliet dressed in a skimpy cat-maid costume during the suicide finale for a reason.

Lelouch: "The flames of hell cut away at my soul...if Satan walks this Earth, then truely I am-...is this a bad time?"
C.C., wearing pyjamas with her butt in the camera: "Well, I was getting changed...can you come back in half an hour? Then I'll be decent"
