What legal rights do I have with my Mazda RX8 that wont starting ?

I have a 04 RX8 I bought privately 18 months ago. I have 70k Kms on the clock and do roughly 6k a year. The engine wouldn't turn over last week so I brought it to my local Mazda garage who have the service history since I have the car. The other history was not with the car as the previous owner imported it and the history went missing. It turns out the combustion is gone in the engine (means nothing to me I'm no good with cars) My local garage said Mazda will look into refitting a new engine as a good will gesture "but may not". Legally do I have any comeback if they don't provide a new engine considering this is a common issue with the RX8 and others have had new engines fitted because of similar issues. :-(. Zero rights.

Which means it was sold as-is. The seller is not responsible for anything about the car, the minute you accept its condition and drive away with it.

Nevermind that it's been a year and a half. Who's to say you didn't take care of it, and you caused it to break down? Not saying you did, but it's a perfectly logical retort.

If Mazda does anything for you, consider yourself incredibly lucky.
 
if the car was imported to start with it will not have a service history.if mazda are giving you a new engine for a 4 year old car you are very lucky mate,if not then you will have to hold your hands up ,its a risk you take with imports.
 
no sorry the car is sold as seen.
if the former owner had tricked you into buying a car that was not working or he knew was faulty you could sue him but the fact you had it 18 months kinda means its just one of them things
 
You are at their mercy. It would sure surprise me if they give you a new engine for a 5 year old car.
 
Whenever you buy anything second hand - the phrase to think of is "Caveat Emptor" Which basically means "Let the buyer beware"

In other words - the car was sold "as seen" If you didn't get it checked out (by the AA for example) before you parted with your cash - then you have no comeback on the seller !
