Which one would be better for a college student...I have no specific needs but want a very fast computer that can multitask, watch movies, handle some games...the specs are somewhat similar, is one company typically more reliable than the other, would one be better for typing and whatnot, is one faster than the other? One of the advantages of the HP is for 50 more I could get a backlit keyboard which could be useful (the sony does not have that option). However the Sony supposedly has longer battery life.

What are the important differences, which one should I get?
 
Not the HP. Avoid HP.

Before thumbing me down, Google HP Atlantis and Apollo Motherboard Problem and you will see why.

But for the price you are willing to spend, get a Macbook Pro and save yourself the headaches.
 
Get the HP with the free ram upgrade....Macbook pro is same amount of money if not even more but weaker specs. More Ram = More multi-tasking, or more Ram = Bigger programs run smoother. Ex: Microsoft word, power point, etc. while having your music program open, instant messaging program opened....it will run smoother with more ram. 'Nuff said!
