What kit do you need for hiking?

I'm 14 and I'm going hiking with my school. They haven't told us what we need. I'm not sure what to get, or where to get any of it.
I know to get the basic stuff like: rucksack, sleeping bag, first aid kit, etc.
It will likely to be cold and it could rain. We are also climbing really HIGH hills.
 
everything depends on the nature of your trip. you mention a sleaping bag, so I imagine, it's a over-night trip. you also need to think about the conditions that you can expect. hot/cold weather, is it in a desert or montains, swamp, .... there are too many "unknown for me to tell you much. but in general, you need good bots that you've been using for a while. new ones will wreck your feet. good quality polar jacket and possibly gore-tex shell jacket. underwear that wicks sweat away from your body, a headlamp comes always handy, I carry one with me all the time even when I go shopping, everywhere. a knife, basic first-aid kit might also come handy, a bottle for water, ...
