I'm wondering, what kind of water can fish live in(non-seawater)? I'm planning on getting a small aquarium and I would like to know if they can live in tap water or purified water. Thanks! (:

Fresh water fish can live in tap water but most tap water has chlorine. When you set up the aquarium, run the filter for half a day before you put in the fish to circulate the water and let the chlorine dissipate (it will naturally go out into the surrounding air). Leave the cover off the tank during this period.

When you add new water, you can buy a chemical at the pet store that will neutralize the chlorine, or you can just let the water sit in an open container for a few hours before you put it into the tank. Actually that is a good idea regardless so it comes to the same temperature as the tank water. Water from the tap can be a lot colder or warmer than the tank water and will shock the fish, sometimes killing them.

If you have a reverse osmosis water filter (tank under the sink with a special filtration system), you can use that directly, or purified water that you buy at the store.

Tap water is fine, you just need to go to a specialized pet shop and get the products for making it safe for fishes. You also need to buy a filter to keep it clean and the rest is very easy.

I have a 55 gallon tank and I use tap water. Right from the hose, then I make the water temperature warm and add capfuls of Aquasafe water conditioner (according to the directions) to take out any harmful chemicals that tap water may have.

Tap water is ok, but you will need to get water conditioner drops to get rid of the chlorine. If you use bottled drinking water, make sure that it doesn't have chlorine. Using bottled water is more expensive in the long run, though.

I have a small aquarium. I fill it with tap water treated with a product called Stress Coat to get rid of chemicals (stress coat us available at most major pet stores). Also be sure you have a filter. Good luck with your fish!
