I have a 2005 Mitsubishi Eclipse GTS, manual transmission, around 24000 miles. Living in a sea-level city [and being a complete idiot at the time] I drove my car into a large puddle in the road after a heavy rain last night -- electrical systems are all intact but the water got about halfway up the exhaust pipe and the engine won't turn over. After stalling out in the water, I immediately pushed it uphill out of the water and the tow truck came about an hour later. A lot of water drained out of my exhaust when it was tilted up the ramp and I took it directly to the servicing place this morning.
What problems could result from my stupid move, how much would they cost to fix, and is it worth it to fix the damage or just eat the money I owe on the car and buy an extremely cheap new one? I assume I should fix it since I still owe thousands on the car and it is fairly new and in great shape otherwise with little mileage.
Help! Thank you.
Well I just got the estimate back from the mechanic and I'm being charged $7400. Apparently I have a "hydro-lock" (?) and water flooded my engine. The whole engine system has to be replaced.
