What kind of paint should I use to paint a shelf? I don't want items sticking...

...to the paint even months later.? Just trying to figure out what kind of paint to use on a shelf. I am worried about things sticking to the shelves even after they're dry. I painted a dresser using a semi-gloss latex, and 4 years later things still stick to the top. I don't want to repeat that mistake. Am I the only one with this problem? :]
