what kind of paint is safe for two different kinds of dogs skin and hair?

My brother has a french bulldog and an american bulldog, and I will be dog sitting around halloween and I think it would be so awesome to paint the french BD like batman and the american BD like robin. I need some advice as on what kind of paint to use. the french is fawn color and the american is white I don't want this joke to stain them or cause any problems because I know dogs with short fine hair like that can be more sensitive. Any suggestions because I would love to be able to do this.

Put colored t-shirts on them for costumes if you want. But don't paint or dye their fur.

I wouldn't use paint, I would use food coloring.
