Okay, so please don't tell me I can like whatever I want, or that good music is whatever music that speaks to me most. It's obviously not like that, at least with the people I know. Music is a big freaking deal with teenagers.
So, I never grew up listening to the stuff like the Beatles and therefore I don't really know how to recognize good music. Good music meaning the what serious music lovers listen to. I learned that the Beatles/John Lennon are practically failsafe. Everybody likes them, so no one can judge you for doing so.
But what else? Since I don't know anything about older music, both classics and modern will do. I also like classical music but I don't know many other than the big names like Mozart. And, last but not least, I think that an obscure rap/hip hop band with tasteful lyrics will up my cool points a bit. But they have to be GOOD.
So yeah, I'm cool with any genre. I love music. I just need to find my feet so I can recognize the good stuff. A couple years ago I actually liked Nickelback, which is a huge no-no amongst my cool, artsy, non-conformist friends. I want to be like them. Pathetic yes, but I need to fit in. Okay, that's enough. Please give me some suggestions. xD
I'm sorry if that came out a bit unclear. I'm looking for the basics, like the classic/oldies whatever you call them. Not what old people listen to, but what music-savvy people listen to. I would also like some suggestions for modern bands and classical music, please.
Yeah, I know that the Beatles are safe to listen to. But I don't know what else.
It seriously isn't, though. I just feel stupid and out of the loop if because I don't know what's good and what's bad.
My cousin said to listen to Modest Mouse, but if they're bad I don't want to get attached to them. Are they safe to listen to?
I'm glad you said Bob Marley because I really am fond of his music and his message. One less thing to be ashamed of!
Dude, you don't get it. I am seriously clueless. The people that I hang around with don't reject me, I just feel left out. I don't have a lot of friends and I think if I could find something that we like in common (they are all huge music fans) I will feel more comfortable talking to them. Seriously, and if I decide I want to start listening to Lady Gaga (which I don't) I will be publicly lynched.
By the way, what about David Matthews band? Good/bad? John Mayer?
God I don't freaking know.
I don't want to follow the crowds at all! People respect individuality. I just think that if I could start off listening to what is generally considered "good," I will be able to make more intelligent decisions on what music I choose to listen to.
Personally, I don't care what kind of music anyone listens to. I pretty much like anything. But if I learn to like good bands, it's okay to have a couple of guilty pleasures.
Thank you so much. I will now go listen and see if I like them. If not, then at least I learned something.
