What kind of lifestyle can I expect while working for the government?

I am considering leaving my career in private industry and working for the government. I am 32yo, single and make 125k/yr and if I stay in my career can expect to make considerably more in the future. The government job will be at 80k through the entire time. But they will also pay for my housing and also I would be eligible for the pension plan.
Can someone put this into real world terms for me? Would this government job be able to provide me and a small family a good middle-class life? I know I could do better in private industry, but if the government job could provide me a good life with some luxuries, I would be content. Any input? Thanks,
 
well if you are in the UK i would go with the government job, people here in the government have everything charged to an expenses account so they dont have to spend any of their wages!! even their parents houses are put on expenses!!
 
My family (of 3) and I are living happily (though it is frustrating at times) off of 35k a year, before taxes.

As long as you enjoy what you're doing, and can find happiness outside of your career, the rest doesn't really matter. Pension and housing, +80k a year... pretty much tells you that 80k is what you'll have for basic necessities and luxury, which, when you're not paying off a mortgage, is a lot of money.
 
I'd say stick with your job and don't work for the government because if people stop paying taxes you might get a budget cut.

Btw, you might not work for the government for a long time because they might find younger people in about 10 years.
