I am looking for a used car under $5000, maintains issues aren't huge and budget breaking when taking to an auto fixer, car can run for years even when needs work, great on gas, and etc etc. I have so many question it isn't breaking the surface. I need detailed answer so I can get a real picture of what is the best car for me. I like a lot of space in the trunk and a space in the front and back seats. I know I may sound picky but I want an car that can be smogged and run for years.

Stick to Honda and Toyota. VW's are great, but way to much on repairs when something goes wrong.
As for Fords they have a bad rep in having the worst breaks in the industry.

Probably what you would want would be something like a Honda Accord or a Toyota Corolla. Those cars will last long if you treat them good, and they get gas mileage like you wouldn't believe. For VW I would say a Golf or a Jetta (with the Jetta being a little more roomy and a little less long lasting), and for Ford I'm really not sure but maybe you could get an old Probe or something for that price. I really wouldn't go with ford, I listen the Toyota and Honda first cause those two are probably your best bet.

Edit: About what the guy above me said about VW, it really depends on when you're talking about. I think his advice about sticking to the jap cars is a good idea, but since you're probably going to be looking at a 90's or so car some of those VW's really aren't that bad.
