I need a dog that is small, but that can take quite long hikes and swimming in lakes in the bush, and running around in the park. Basically a compact lab retriever lol. Also while not being to nippy/shirpy/over hyper. Thanks!

jack russel, italian greyhound, thats pretty much it don't ever try doing that with a dacshund or a corgi their backs are very sensitive since they are long but from what ive seen italian greyhounds and jack russels and also boston terriers love long walks and exercise.

1.) Boykin Spaniels (mostly bird dogs, love to be outside and will go swimming)
2.) any type of Hound loves this type of exercise, but some don't like their barking..
3.) Terriers love this as well but, you might want one of the tall ones like an American Staffordshire Terrier for the hiking.

Almost any dog will swim and run with you for a while, but really you have to think of the type of hiking you want to do (off trail, cleared path, endurance...). Like for endurance, you want a leaned dog that won't tire as soon (no mastifs or st. bernards). For Off train you wouldn't want a dog that will get tangled in the underbrush, so naturally a short haired dog. And generally a taller dog that can keep up, but probably not as tall as a Great Dane.

So do your research on whatever type of dog you have in mind and make sure it would fit your type of exercise without tiring it out or hurting it.

west highland white terrier.
beautifu dogs, very intelligent, loves being outdoors, very active, loves water, and just the best companian ever.
look them up, im sure a westie would suit you perfectly.

Hi, sounds like an Affenpinscher would fit the bill! They are 'toy' sized, tiny dogs but don't realise it, they will walk as far as you do, are fit and athletic and don't have any of the yappy small dog syndrome. Look them up, you'll fall in love! They are Gnasher from Dennis the Menace dogs! :)
