People dressed in typical clothing for their time, women frequently wore darker colors after marriage and when widowed. Men wore dark heavy pants and coats, white or blue shirts. Boots and button shoes.

Many volunteer units designed their own uniforms and many were quite colorful. They did not attempt to 'camouflage' themselves as do the soldiers of today.
