...deck? It is 18" high.? Newly assembled and ready to add plants and compost/dirt mixture, but I don't know what kind of bottom to put in it if a bottom at all. Does the water have to drain out completely? Plastic, no plastic? Will the wood rot?
it is made of red wood because it is some what rot resistant.
yes it must drain,
all planters need to drain for healthy plants.
a layer of gravel 2 inch thick would be great. or some other loose mat`l to allow good drainage.
And set the planter on some bricks or something so it wont stay wet under the planter and rot the wood of the deck.
