More specifics are needed. If he likes to ride in the streets but cut through grass, wooded areas etc, perhaps a hybrid or mountain bike. If he has the opportunity to ride in paved open spaces, he might like a road bike. How about you make up an excuse that you need to go the bike store and let him look around with you.
