What is your Opinion of Ability Tracking in Schools?

A common schooling practice in public school districts is ability tracking. Starting usually in 7th grade, students are placed in classes based on perceived intelligence, grades and teacher recommendations. Higher track students (Honors, College Prep) are taught a great deal more than lower track students (Academic and so forth), thus given more opportunities and a better chance to get into college.
What is your opinion of this? Do you think it's a good or fair practice? Or do you think it should be done away with?
