to tell you the truth..all ive had is sony heads..which arent that great..but from word and friends systems..go with a pioneer..

what do you mean stereo? as in the head unit?

if you are talking about head units i have a pionner pioneer avh-p4000dvd double pin in my lincoln. its pretty nice i like it alot so i suggest pioneer.
i would stay clear of alpine they suck

I bought a used Sony Xplode 7 yrs ago on e-bay for 150 bucks and it's been in 4 different cars and still works and sounds great. Go Sony.

honestly most people would recommend Kenwood for most beginners and i agree with that....just due to the fact that they've been around a LONG time and have a good rep....however to consider the BEST....each person has their own preferences....and my personal preference is PIONEER due to the fact that some of their faceplates include the feature of Super Bass....it cranks up ALL the juice in subs and can make your headliner crack (experience on that)

why? experience with their brands. they know audio.

not sony. bought a $2000 receiver, breaks two months later. playstation 3 sucks. my ps2 broke a year after i got it.

all the other brands though are decent enough. get what fits your budget, but pioneer is my favorite. plus i like the design of their headunits.
