My favorite area of history is any time period prior to the invention of gunpowder. I feel as if people had to organize themselves much more in those periods, due to the fact that they couldn't get a few hundred men and take a city, or wage war with a few cannons. It took years of planning, traveling, and preparing to even come close to doing anything substantial, such as taking a city, or migrating people to a new location.
If you'd like to learn more about these time periods, then I suggest reading a bit on Genghis Khan and the Mongols, the Great Wall of China, the Huns, all of the dynasties involved in China and Japan, Shoguns and Emperors, the invention of gunpowder, Qin Shi Huang and his terracotta army, Marco Polo, and many other topics relating to China and Japan.
