What is your favorite alternative rock album from 1991?

Okay, I just spent a a little while trying to think of some and it seemed like almost every single album I thought of turned out to either be from 90 or 92 when I looked it up. Nevertheless here are ten favorites of mine from 91, not sure if they all really count as "alternative rock" but oh well:

Mr. Bungle—s/t
My Bloody Valentine—Loveless
My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult—Sexplosion!
Primus—Sailing the Seas of Cheese
Rocket from the Crypt—Paint as a Fragrance
Siouxsie and the Banshees—Superstition
Swans—White Light from the Mouth of Infinity
 
It's because I was a Microdisney fan first. ;)



Because in one you list a bunch of albums spanning your whole life and in this one you talk about the music from 1991.
I don't see how having one negates the other, that's why it has it's own thread

Come now, as good as Gish is you certainly can't say it is THE album by the Smashing Pumpkins. Even as an underrated classic, it still can't compare to some of the later work they did.

My Bloody Valentine - Loveless
Slint - Spiderland

I'll choose Spiderland as my favorite... yep
 
A quick perusal of my rateyourmusic ratings for 1991 has proved this to be a difficult task, even if restricted to alternative rock. I'll get back to this tomorrow.

And I don't think a poll is really necessary, as someone's favorite is bound to be left out, no?

May be one of my favorites by the Smashing Pumpkins. I like how someone said on this forum in some thread that Billy Corgan's music was best when he had hair and as he progressivley lost hair his albums started sucking. I kind of agree with that statement.

Treepeople - Guilt Regret Erabarrassment

A really great album from Doug Martsch's pre-Built to Spill band. They have solos J Mascis would be proud of.

Slint - Spiderland

Never got big into Red Hot Chili Peppers and as much as I love Mr. Bungle, Disco Volante is my favourite album by them. I did have a summer love affair with the Smashing Pumpkins when I was 16, but after I started realizing how much of a control freak Billy Corgan was, my opinion of the band started to wane, however if I did have to pick a favourite album Gish would be nuraber 2 (hehe), because of songs "Siva" and "Rhinoceros". In fact "Rhinoceros" was my favourite song to play when I use to busk at Lonsdale Quey in North Vancouver. Anyways, this album may be less than a month old in my collection but I can already see why this band is so highly regarded. Very skilled musicianship and a modest aura that seems to encompass the band. I wish they put out more than two albums, but I am incredibly happy with what was put out by them. Also nobody else has mentioned it...
 
I had a pretty good list of 25 different albums that I compiled from several "best-of" lists (and a few biased choices ;)) that covered every album mentioned so far. While I agree with you that someone's favorite is bound to get left off, I assumed there would be folks who don't realize the extent of the awesomeness too... :)
 
Like I said, I thought a more interesting thread would be what year people believe is the best for music, and what's their favourite album from that year as well.

If I started a thread about the favourite album from 94 and then someone decided to do another one about a different year, it'd get a bit silly.

Not that I'm too bothered, it's not a bad thread, just found it strange it was focused on 91, even though that's a great year (I was born! :D)

I agree this is great but I don't really think it counts since it's just a collection of two LPs and an EP from the 80s and Scratch Acid was already broken up by 91.
