What Is Your Definition Of A "Sell Out"?

I completely agree. Especially with the bolded part. I was trying to figure out how to explain that point. I think that same thing can be said for a lot of the "sell outs". Lately it seems a lot of Electronic music has almost seemed to lose its boundaries. For example, Trance. Trance was a commercial genre and now it's like an amalgamated version of House, Electro, and some serablance of Trance. Mainly because House and Electro are now the commercial genres of choice. Unfortunately it seems other genres have picked up on this as well and seems like even artists like Noisia are getting in on it. Although, quite awesomely, kickass Ferry Corsten was making Electro influenced Trance all the way back in 03 so he was way ahead of the curve.

But, as you said, Electronic music is a sort of love/hate thing. There's always innovation and evolution so you don't get bored, but then the artists you've come to enjoy will always somehow change and not always for the better. You can never really "expect" anything from anyone.

I'm willing to bet they at least didn't have to do the hunting or gathering that day. Maybe that was payment enough. :)

And maybe the ones who got creative are the reason for all those mythological creatures from throughout history.

That's because this:

and this:

Is just a more specific way of saying this:

They way I see it, who cares if an artist/band wants to make more money. Making music is their job, and in a normal job you get more money when promoted, and in the music buisness getting more popular is like getting promoted. I'm sure you guys would love to make more money at your job just by changing what you do a little bit.

I set a sell-out as someone who has left to pursue their ideas more public to make more money or make more money easier.A personal definition is someone who has changed behavior to please someone else at the expense of their own.Behavioral change for good or for the benefit of a group can not meet this definition.

This is better:

Also, new Weezer isn't that bad. The Red Album especially was just as good as their old stuff.

That. And a band that makes a record with 3 singles on it and a load of bland boring filler, in an attempt to sell.

I think in 4 posts we've managed to sum it up.

Exactly. But i suppose a better way to put it would be when a band compromises their style in order to be accepted by a mainstream audience.

Yeah close this thread it's only going to go around in circles.

I see a sell-out as a band who makes music purely and only for the money, without any motivation to make the music good.

I don't consider many banRAB as sell-outs though. You have to really ask the band if they've sold out or not to know whether they have

I don't think anyone would purposely put bland boring filler on an album just because they feel they have 3 hit singles. They may not put much effort into it all and concentrate on some, but to purposely use filler...I don't know.

Agreed with the general consensus though, except for this but I sense sarcasm:

Art can be an occupation. A lot of people make music for money, but they're not sell-outs, they don't have some sort of 'error in judgment', it's just a viable source of income.

Haha I agree. I actually did love and still love the first Weezer album (although people made fun of me for that even in 1994)

I always wondered what exactly motivates that guy. He's definitely got a knack for making rock songs - but why does he do it that way?

 I certainly would have rather painted caves than chase mastodons off of cliRAB or whatever. And the mythological creature thing is certianly true - aren't whole religions based on that kind of thing? But I mean the really creative cavemen who had to paint regular hunting scenes or dragons or demons or whatever was popular at the time - and then at night they were too tired from painting other people's stuff to express some great idea they had.

true - it's a weak term. Like how people call songs that they don't like by banRAB they do like 'filler'

Totally true for me as well. How can we ever know why a band sucks anyway? Maybe they 'sold out' or maybe they just naturally began to suck at some point. I really don't care why. The term 'sellout' is used by people who have sold out expressive language

why get all bent over it?

just enjoy the music or don't---could give a **** about the intentions or the money

what's so noble about most of these "sell out" musicians anyway?

gonna have to strongly disagree with you there, although Red is waaaay better then Make Believe or Raditude.

So people also consider Green Day sellouts? I'm not a big fan of them but from what people tell me American Idiot is pretty highly regarded among Green Day fans. Why are people upset that they are more popular if the quality is still high?

Maybe they don't perceive it as filler, but I think banRAB deviate from their style and tone it down. Their style and energy is what made the band great, which just makes the non singles boring bland filler crap.
