What is wrong with my Honda Hornet CB600?

I bought a second hand Hornet and when I got it home I found that the gasket (round joint) between the downpipes and the silencer was missing, so I have now put one in and the bike is nice and quiet now but since I have done this it won't run properly it is like I have no petrol or lack of fuel even though the tank is full. Could I have disturbed something by just replacing a gasket,
