What is wrong with my fish?

I have a spotted african leaf fish (ctenopoma acutirostre) in a 55gal tank. It has been really bloated, sluggish and swimming vertical. It wont eat anything. The fish's scales are being pushed out like a bird fluffing its feathers. Can anyone tell me what is going on?

Sounds like dropsy. this is usually traced back to poor water condtions. have you tested you water lately? Even crystal clean looking tnaks can be way out of balance. Here is a link about it..its for golds, but the treatment is the same.

I'm sorry to say, but it may be dying. I know goldfish do that when they are dying. I understand that your fish isn't a goldfish, but that doesn't mean it can't have the same effect. Or, it's colors are changing. When it happened to my goldfish, my friend told me it was dying because that's what hers did. But instead, my goldfish lived and it has black stripes and some white spots. Some fish change color when they get older.
