A few weeks ago I was installing some things in my car. I was stretched over side ways to the left to the passenger seat for a couple of minutes and when I got up I felt a sharp pain just to the right of my spine on the right side of my body.

Since then I sometimes get sharp pain and my muscles feel tense and I occasionaly hear a cracking sound. If I have a nasty sneeze, that immediately triggers the pain and the lower right side feels very stretched.

Have I done some permanent damage?

it sounRAB more like a strain - maybe see a chiropractor or get a massage or see your doctor for some muscle relaxers. If the pain persists then you might need do some future testing. The other thing to look for is radiating pain that travels down your leg that is quite often a disc problem.

Hope you feel better soon.

Why would my back crack due to a strain? Is this typical for a muscle strain of the back, to have slight internal cracking?

We can all have a few creaks or cracking sounRAB in the joints now & then - especially as we get older & have injuries, arthritis & the like.

If you're young though & have never had it before it can be disturbing! If the "cracking" or "popping" are always coming from one spot though you may have pulled something - causing a strain, possibly even a minor tear. It's even possible to pull a rib head slightly out of place. Keep in mind that the attachments (ligments & tendons) can be strained, overstretched, or even ruptured - though with the description you gave it didn't sound like this is a major or permanent injury. You could try moist heat packs & gentle stretching - since you're in the post-injury phase now. But if it doesn't seem to be getting better, a visit for an evaluation with your doctor may be in order!

I'm only 25 and this is the first time I've had a muscle strain of the back.

I've had it confirmed by the Doctor that it is a strain and he has advised me to do some stretches.

I also have pain on the top end of my buttocks, deep inside. I mentioned that too and he generally said the pain may be due to weak back muscles.

I was thinking it may be Piriformis Syndrome but I'll do the exercises he gave me and see what happens.

I find it more painful to sit down than to stand up due to the buttock pain.

While the diagnosis of a strain is certainly a possibility - there are others as well. Regardless of whether you are in great or not so great shape, weight, etc, the body can be affected by a multitude of things.

If you lift or sometimes turn the wrong way it may have been the trigger. Or you might have an old injury that comes back to haunt you. Sometimes however it doesn't seem like you did anything to cause it.

It maybe that you have a more sedentary lifestyle & that you do need more exercise. When the hips & buttocks have the type of deep pain you describe it may be sciatica, which can cause localized pain in that area alone, or it may cause the pain to track down either the back or side of the leg into the thigh - or sometimes all the way down into the lower leg. The sciatic nerve is a long one & can be inflamed by a nuraber of things. Sometimes icing the area can be helpful - though it can take sometime to clear.

Deep pressure work - either with a good sports massage or trigger point point work, Shiatsu, etc. can help. You can also work on it with various size balls - from a used tennis ball to a slightly larger rubber ball. Inexpensive ones can usually be found in any kiRAB or sporting gooRAB department.

If the lower back into the hips is hurting you may need to be addressing the core muscles (the abs) and getting them stronger. They support the back & can affect these areas a great deal. So consider some strength training, start off slow - preferably with a trainer who knows their stuff - and build up.

Good luck with clearing out the problem you've been having!
