All around the world you will see certain indivuals or ethnic groups emulating or immitating other ethnic groups. An example would be
Caucasians acting African American
Vice Versa
South Asians acting Black
Asians Acting white
the list could go on.

My question is what is wrong with that? Why are people condemned as try hards or ridiculed? Is it such a sin to have an open mind and appreciation of other people's culture? I certainly am open to a wide array of different cultures in terms of food, music and customs even though I may not understand the language!

no there is nothing wrong with that at all its just people's need to feel unique that makes people trip over dumb things like that.

Ethnic groups are often underpinned by a strong sense of unity. This extends to sub-cultures too..And when someone recreates the mannerisms on which that unity is built without actually being part of it, Some groups see this as offensive. Sort of like walking around wearing a "J-Dilla changed my life" T-shirt when you don't know who J-Dilla.

There is nothing wrong, People enjoy feeling accepted. Acceptance and being embraced by a large culture is a nice feeling. If this is done insincerely...

To quote Cleveland on family guy "Maybe your son is copying the mannerisms of another culture because he doesn't know enough about his own."

Its not a sin. You're a try hard if you overdo it to the point where by you are visibly making a spectacle of yourself.
