What is violent masculinity?

1. It is a concept intoduced by Jackson Katz.
He explains it as a form of fundamentalist reaction to the perceived attacks on masculinity especially those generated since the 1960s by the feminist critique of gender relations.

His evidence includes the increased emphasis, in the several media portayals (films, TV, advertisments, on mens physical strength and physical power..

2. see ref 2 below for his discussion of violent masculinty and advertisements

3.You could interpet his work as part of Derrida's concept of' Dfferance' ie that we constantly create our own self imag eby postionaing ourselves as not like 'the Other'.In Katz argument men are increasingly likel yto generate denigrative description of' 'wussy men' against which they judge themselves.

3. Katz analyis is interesting but it is a good idea to read it in the context of the more sociolgically nuanced account of masculinity in R W Connell's text (ref 3 below)
