What is 'True' 4G..........?

At my job the other day a guy came in that worked with Motorolla and i saw him with the Droid X and i told him that the Droid X is the phone i wanna get, and my friend said to me that i should get the Sprint Evo because its 4G and the motorolla guy said, "Dont get too excited, all these supposed 4G phones arent true 4G", and it made me wonder what the heck he was talking about, so what is true 4G?
