There's a type of sculpture that reminds me of bonsai, except instead of trees, rocks are used. A rock is chosen with different minerals in it, like a mixture of soft rock and hard rock. And then some of the soft rock is sandblasted away, or maybe dissolved with acid (I'm not sure) leaving the hard rock behind. The hard rock has interesting shapes, and looks like something that could be the size of a mountain, but it is maybe a foot or two across. Some of the soft matrix rock remains, maybe acting as a base for the hard rock.
The geological phenomenon called tafoni reminds me of this type of art.
