It was about a girl living at a house in a small town maybe in the 1800s or early 1900s near a lake. She frequently looked up words in a dictionary because she had no friends including words for the hair on a red haired man's butt after seeing him in a compromising position with a woman who had many children. She speculates then that since the oldest are blonde haired and the youngest: red haired that he must have fathered them after her husband died. there is also a young woman found dead in the lake, she was kept in the parlor of the inn or house that the main girl lived in for some reason and the girl found her diary that said she was 'gravid' at the time of her death. The main girl looked this up and found it to mean pregnant so she said something like 'funny how a word for pregnancy can sound so much like grave.'
