what is this fashionable thing called?

haha from my question title you get the hint that i have no idea what I am talking about. I am wondering what those "jacket" like things are called? they almost look like haulter tops and they usually come down to about your belly button maybe longer. they button in the front. they are supposedly really fashionable...I no longer go shopping very much but always see those, I have never caught the name. what are they called? (: thanks so much. (:
they usually come in black and brown, stripes and solid. (: thanks so much. 10 points for best answer. meaning detail and name of the stupid thing. One more question? are they still "in" (fashion wise)
