I'm trying to find the title/author of a children's book I read about 20 years ago, but have so far been unsuccessful. These are the details I remember (although I may be incorrect):
The main character is named Millie or Millicent and she's probably around 9-12 years old.
The story takes place in a city in the US, probably on the East Cost, possibly New York. The story also takes place in the past, sometime in the early 20th century, probably in the 1930s or 1940s, recently after the invention of the ballpoint pen.
What I remember of the plot is that Millie/Millicent has seen an advertisement for the newly invented ballpoint pen, by a company that begins with an "R" -- possibly "Rocket" or "Rollings" -- and there's a catch jingle about how wonderful the pen is. Millie/Millicent desperately wants one, and believes she'll be a much better student in school if she has one, but her parents tell her it's ridiculous and a waste of money. Somehow she gets one anyway and it's a big disappointment.
Any ideas?
