My teacher read this book to us in 5th grade and I'd love to read it again but I can't remember the title!
It takes place post WWIII I do believe.
I recall it being kinda' 50's-ish with the characters drinking ice cream soda from a soda jerk.
Something about the trucks being brightly colored.
And in the end I can remember the protagonist wiring a switch so that if he let's go it will detonate an explosive, he does this to avoid being shot.
Your help would be lovely!
