This is the plot of a science fiction book that I read maybe...15 years ago?
The story starts off on a planet where humans live amongst gigantic insects. The plant life is primarily fungus (mushrooms, etc) and those are also giant. The insects are the dominant life form and the humans try to survive amongst them. The climate is tropical. One human (a boy/man? I think a teenager or young man) goes on a journey and finds himself in the higher latitudes where the climate is much cooler, and there are no giant insects. He also discovers dogs. And a spaceship?
What happened was that the ancestors of these humans were colonists, and I think that something went wrong, and they crashed on the planet. The insects were possibly part of the stuff they were carrying on the ship, and conditions in the tropics of the planet allowed them to grow/evolve to such sizes. In the end, the people move to the cooler climates and live with the dogs (which are the descendants of the original dogs from the ship).
Can anyone tell me the title of this book? Thanks!
