What is the title/author of this science fiction book I read in the 80's/?

It was about the kid that was forced to wear a suit of 'tendrils' to fight spaceships. I don't remember though, if the spaceships were from other governments or if the were aliens.
I don't think it's Ender's Game the synopsis of that series doesn't sound right. But thanks, cause I think I might check that series out.
