What is the thing that pushes in the Brake light switch on a 97 honda civic hx?

it's not the brake light switch itself, but the little rubber/plastic piece that is inserted into the brake pedal, so it will push the switch in to make the lights shut off.
 
called a plunger......or stop........but will b hard to find it...since most likely is dealer only and they only go back like 7 years..........good luck
