What is the story behind the candy buffet at weddings?

It started as a way to be "different" at weddings, but now everyone does it.

As a guest, Im not a fan. I used to like candy when I was a kid, but now I find it slightly revolting in large quantities like a buffet. Just give me a sliver of wedding cake and Im happy.

Apparently there is a long-standing regional tradition in Pennsylvania to serve homemade cookie buffets at weddings, in addition to dinner and cake. (It's kind of like how the "groom's cake" is a tradition at Southern weddings.)

I wonder if the candy buffet idea is an outgrowth of the cookie buffet.

There's not really a story, it's just something people decided to start doing. It's kind of the favors and a thank you to guests, and it gives more variety than just one type of candy at each place setting. I think they are nice and if it fits your personalities, and your wedding isn't extremely formal, they are a nice touch. :)
Here is a cute poem that I found online that I thought about using:

Step right up
To the candy buffet
It’s a sweet addition
To a wonderful day

This is a treat
We are offering you
On this day we say “I do”
Use the scoop
Choose what you like
Leave some for others
Be Polite.

As you enjoy
Your bag of treats
Please remember
Love is sweet!

Thank you for joining us today!
