What is The Sims game?

yeah yeah i know you probably think this is stupid sounding, but what is "The Sims"? i understand that it's a game, but what is the point of it? what do you do to play it? what do you play it on? [like what kind of consoles] and where can you get it?

ive heard a lot about it and now i want to know what it is so please help haha thanks so much (:
