In the novel speak by Laurie Halse Anderson, the main character Medinda is given a tree as her art project subject. It appears also near the end on her front lawn. I am thinking it means toward the beginning of the year, like her social life, it sucked. But as the year went on, the tree progressed as did her social life. Like the tree on her lawn, cutting off the branches symbolized a new beginning. You have to move backward to go forward. Am I on the right track or is there a deeper meaning??
