What is the significance of the Three Day Flower in Asian cultures? Is there one?

The reason I ask is because in the first episode of the anime Shin Koihime Musou (found on animeready.com) a reference is made to a three day flower growing on the head of one of the characters, and this is the reason why she has not shown up for dinner. Does this represent absentmindedness, or has she been cursed, because a few of the other characters were shocked by this comment? Thank you for your consideration.
