What is the significance of being sworn-in while at court?

I'm writing a paper, and i need to know what the value of being sworn-in means. like why do we do it?
 
WHEN YOU'RE SWORN IN, IT MEANS THAT THE TESTIMONY OR ANYTHING YOU SAY IS THE TRUTH AND YOU'RE NOT SUPPOSE TO LIE.
