What is the secret when editing with Adobe Photoshop or Picnik...?

I have begun editing photos with both of the programs mentioned above and I know how to use the programs except one little detail:

What is the suggested size to save the pictures in so that the pictures can completely fit into a 4x6 or made into a 8x10??

My files are always too large and it cuts some of the picture off if you try to print them.

Anyone know??

Your image has to be in the correct format (aspect ratio) to begin with. If you multiply 4x6 by two, you can see that it is 8x12 - not the same as 8x10.
