what is the rubber covered bolt used for on the back of car stereos?

Pretty much every car stereo i have ever seen has a bolt protruding out the back OR comes with a bolt that can be screwed into the back. normally provided with a removable rubber cap. what are these used for and why the need for the rubber cap? the only example pic i can find on google shows it with a runner? fitted several stereos in my time but never seen or heard of a runner. maybe its different with European vehicles. here it is (with black plastic runner attached)
