What is the recommended watts a stock car can handle for car audio?

I have a '99 Jetta and a brand new altnator. I am looking to get a system for my car and i was wondering what a safe level of watts my car can handle before it tries to power too many things. I am looking to use about 300-500 watts for my system from the amp. Is there a cutoff point and a level as to when i may or may not need a capacitor? Thanks.
 
you'll be perfectly fine, I have an over 1750 watt watt system in my '05 civic with the stock alternator. I also don't have a capacitator, my only upgrade is a yellowtop battery.
In other words, you don't need a cap. and you'll be perfectly fine with the system you want. hope i helped :)
