What is the purpose of the tree of knowledge in the garden of eden?

It says in the Bible that there was only ONE SINGLE tree that man was not to eat the fruit of? Just one single tree, correct? In nature, trees have fruit for reproduction, correct? This tree had fruit. Well, where is this tree? It should still be there, or did it die? I rest my case.
 
IMO- the tree of knowledge served no purpose but was used by God to set a boundary for humans to demonstrate their obedience to him by obeying his law not to eat from the tree.
